Artist Statement
As the field of gemstone carving gains momentum in the United States, new talents are emerging to embrace, and challenge the art of lapidary. One such talent is Ron Martinez. In his carvings one can tour much of the unique abundance that is found in the California landscape. From the rolling surf of the coast, to cool clear streams and rich golden glory of the Sierras, to the lush grape vineyards that produce world-class wine vintages, symbols of the richness of his surroundings are reflected in Ron's art. His carvings seek a harmony between art and nature, incorporating sensuous flowing lines that hint of cool flowing water, or the fertile abundance of grape vines in fruit.
Unique to his craft are carvings in snowy white quartz, liberally laced with pure native gold produced by the Original Sixteen to One Mine in Allegheny, California. Prized from deep, hard rock tunnels the gold from this mine is exceptionally pure, and heavily concentrated in the pure white quartz veins. Ron has a close working relationship with the mine owners, which provides him access to this remarkable material to serve a palette for his artwork.
Purple and white grapes grow together in Ametrine clusters, hot springs bubble from cool blue Aquamarine, sunsets are reflected in delicate peach Morganite, majestic pines peer from green jade, vibrant spring growth burst from Chrysophrase. Subjects are as abundant as the beautiful gemstones in which they are rendered.
Ron's carvings are acquired by connoisseurs of unique jewelry in one of kind designs by Wendy Bilodeau, of Wenric's in San Jose, California. Ron "got his start" carving at Wenric's,. As Ron's carvings are finding their way into more gem show venues, more jewelers are discovering these lovely works of art to incorporate into their own creations. Hard as it is to put any of his creative offspring up for adoption, Ron can console himself as he lovingly crafts his net work in progress.
